The league leaders continued their Langer Trophy dominance on Wednesday afternoon as they proved too big, too fast and too powerful for Caloundra, with Ipswich running away convincing 44-20 winners.

The visitors were quick to strike with Reeco Kirk crossing the stripe after a nice dummy to go next to the left upright and less than four minutes later it was big, bairn-storming number eight Mafiou Cherif who charged over two defenders to extend the lead.

Caloundra were barely able to get the footy into their own half as Ipswich centre Christian Simpson stepped and weaved his way over the tryline for their third try in the opening 20 minutes.

The scoreline quickly started to get ugly as Ipswich crossed for their fourth straight try through some nice link-up play between fullback Tom Parker and left winger Zak Setu.

The home side were finally able to break into their own half and after some nice roll-on sets it was a grubber kick from Callum Ballantyne that had Austin Maxwell-Smith land on the footy under the post.

With just a few minutes remaining until the halftime break Caloundra were able to produce one of the tries of the season, which started by a grubber pick-up from fullback Ellyjah Birve.

The crafty rising star picked off the Ipswich attack on his own 5m line before beating the two chase-down defenders, crossing halfway and dishing off to captain Zac Garton in support.

Garton had the arms swinging but was run down by the several Ipswich chasers before offloading the ball to the ground 15m from home.

The ball was picked up by right winger Rhico Markey before he dished the ball to Tristan Roselt who finished it off with a beautiful swan dive in the corner.

The match resumed with Ipswich leading 22-10 as the competition favourites continued to show exactly why they hold that title, crossing for a further two tries before Caloundra hit back again to close the gap.

Halfback Teina Maoate tucked it under his arm and barged over the line to make the score 34-16 before a deflected grubber kick bounced the way of Rhico Markey on the right wing.

Ipswich continued to remain in control of the ball and field possession as Mafiou Cherif was again too hard to stop close to the line and Parker again added to the try-scoring fest before full time.

WALTERS CUP

Ipswich continued their strong run of form in their final regular season Walters Trophy match, beating Stretton College 46-6 on Wednesday afternoon.

Ipswich scored four first half tries to lead 18-0 at the break

The home side scored a classy try next to the left upright straight after the break to give them hope.

But that try only added fuel to the fire as Ipswich piled on the points to run away convincing winners.

PREVIEW

A second Langer Trophy minor premiership in three seasons is in the offering for Ipswich SHS when they travel north to play Caloundra SHS at Tinomee Oval on Wednesday.

Ipswich have won all six games so far and simply need to not lose heavily against winless Caloundra to grab the top billing for the upcoming quarterfinals.

Ipswich were able to overcome a gritty Marsden side last week with a 26-10 win while Caloundra fell heartbreakingly short in their 24-18 loss to Redcliffe.

In 2022, Ipswich travelled a similar path, going undefeated in the regular season before beating Palm Beach Currumbin 16-12 in the grand final.

They then went on to be crowned national champions with a big win over Sydney school Patrician Brothers Fairfield.

Last season, despite finishing third on the ladder, they met PBC in the grand final again only for the result to be flipped.

A win on Wednesday would not only see them finish with a perfect record once again, but also ensure their favouritism heading into the business end of the season.

Caloundra sit bottom of the table despite being competitive in the majority of their matches through the first six rounds.

The Sunshine Coast-based school have only suffered defeats in excess of two-try margins twice this season and will look to finish strong in front of their home crowd.
