Two wins in two games now for improving Redcliffe, although this nailbiting success over Caloundra was only settled with a penalty goal on fulltime. Check out the Walters Cup/Langer Trophy REPLAYS.

Redcliffe made it back-to-back wins in round six as they served a heartbreaking 24-18 result to northern rivals Caloundra.

It started as a stalemate in the opening term with both sides trading blows but unable to capitalise on any true field or ball possession.

Some nice link up play between Caloundra’s Zac Garton and Tyler Conquest had Redcliffe on the back foot before a lovely chip and chase from fullback Ellyjah Birve allowed Caloundra to open the scoring.

The following 15 minutes continued along the same lines with neither side taking control of the match before Redcliffe hit back on the stroke of halftime.

Right winger Seuifalemua Jordan Seuao leapt, juggled and came down with the footy to score in the corner as the sides went into the halftime break 6-4 in favour of Caloundra.

Redcliffe fired out of the blocks in the second half, rolling through the Caloundra defence before taking the lead thanks to a try to left winger Khan Turnbull.

Fullback Dustin Appo slotted the conversion from the sideline as Redcliffe continued their second half assault.

Tylah Akai was able to cross the white line for three straight unanswered tries followed by Turnbull’s second of the match.

Caloundra were finally able to get some ball in hand as Noah Noke barged his way over next to the posts, closing the gap to 10 points.

Utility hooker Will Joyner continued his stellar year for Caloundra, spinning through the defence to make it a one try contest with under 10 minutes remaining.

The pressure, intensity and nerves lifted in the final five minutes with both sides going all-in to come away with the points.

Redcliffe secured a penalty from in front and as they converted the extra two points, the referee called full time with the match ending 24-18.

WALTERS CUP

Redcliffe were simply too big and too strong to stop in their Walters Cup clash, beating out Stretton College 36-6.

Redcliffe shot out to a two-try lead in the opening 10 minutes before the home side hit back to reduce the gap to just two points.

That response only seemed to add fuel to the fire for Redcliffe who piled on a further three tries before the halftime break.

The match resumed with Redcliffe leading 24-6 before extending the lead with a further two tries.

Buoyed by a surprise victory last week, Redcliffe SHS have vowed to keep their Langer Trophy season humming along against Caloundra SHS on Wednesday.

Caloundra were beaten 20-10 against Wavell SHS while Redcliffe produced a barnstorming 44-6 win over Mabel Park to record their first-ever competition victory.

The latest instalment of the northern rivalry kicks off at 3.15pm at Caloundra Junior Rugby League Club, while the Walters Cup match between Stretton State College and Redcliffe SHS will be played from 2pm at Brandon Park.

“It’s a culmination of a lot of extra sessions and hard work really,” said Redcliffe head of football Jay Wilkinson after the win.

“There’s a lot of teachers that have put a lot of time into this program, the boys come in and do their, it’s that. It’s been a while coming and we’re pretty happy with it.

“We knew it would come, it was just a matter of when.

“When you work hard for something and you get it it’s enjoyable.”

The round five win was the Eagles’ first in three seasons of competing in the top SEQ schools competition, but they will be out for revenge after last year's 26-16 result against Caloundra knocked them out of a finals position.

Redcliffe head coach Scott Murray, who works with Wayne Bennett at the Dolphins and was Redcliffe’s foundation coach in 2022, returned to the role this year because he ‘missed the school league program so much’.

Wilkinson said he was excited for Wednesday's matchup.

“For us it’s about doing it all again, which is what the good teams of this competition do,” he said.

“It’s about putting on the same level of effort, same level of defence and attack and, to be honest, I think the boys have another gear to go to.

“Teams always perform better on their home ground, so that’s a challenge in itself, but Caloundra are a very good and well coached team.

“They’re still fresh new to the competition but they’re getting better with every game and have some key strike players as well.”

A win would see Redcliffe secure their spot in the finals, but a victory in favour of Caloundra would keep the hunt for seventh spot up for grabs.

The top seven progress through to the quarterfinals while the eighth spot is awarded to the winner of the Gee Cup v Titans Cup final.
