Langer Trophy/Walters Cup live stream: Caloundra SHS against Redcliffe SHS

After a tough introductory season, Caloundra can, at least, now say they are winners of a Langer Trophy game, and heading for the quarter finals to boot, after taking down Redcliffe. Relive all the action.

Caloundra won the battle of the winless schools to secure their spot in next week’s Langer Trophy quarter finals.

The competition newcomers had struggled to make an impression in their opening six games, but in front of their home crowd in a do-or-die game, they produced the goods when it mattered most to take down Redcliffe State High 26-16.

Redcliffe, who have been in the competition one season longer, are still waiting for their first win and won’t play a part in the final eight battle.

WALTERS CUP

Three first-half tries laid the platform for Redcliffe’s victory over Caloundra in the Walters Cup clash on Wednesday afternoon.

The Redcliffe outfit dominated from the start, making plenty of metres through the middle and they capitalised by scoring tries in the eighth, 16th and 23rd minute for an 18-0 halftime lead.

Caloundra came out of the sheds with renewed intent in the second half.

They looked destined to score what could have been a try of the year contender off the back of a perfectly placed chip kick before the last pass was ruled forward.

They continued to mount pressure their opponents and were rewarded with a try midway through the second half.

Any chance of a comeback was snuffed out when Redcliffe hit back five minutes later to secure a 22-6 win.

The equation is simple for Caloundra SHS and Redcliffe SHS if they want to continue their 2023 Langer Trophy campaigns.

Win and a quarter final berth will be assured. Lose and, well, the season is over.

The matches on Wednesday will be the last of the regular season before the top seven teams assemble on August 9 at Bishop Park (Norths) for the quarterfinals.

Either Caloundra or Redcliffe will finish eighth and be replaced at position #6 by the winner of the Gee Cup v Titans Cup match on Tuesday. See that preview here.

Redcliffe SHS are into their second season in the premier Queensland schoolboys rugby league competition - and are yet to register a win.

They came close at the back end of 2022 when beaten by six points by Wavell and then 24-22 in then final game by Coombabah.

Caloundra SHS became the first school from the Sunshine Coast to qualify back in May.

They have found the going hard against quality opposition, but head coach Toby Poole said his side was eager to see what itcould produce.

“The boys are very excited about the opportunity that presents itself,” he said.

Caloundra‘s Brad Higgins and Redcliffe SHS stars Loka Toia and John Fineanganofo.

“We have a good relationship with the Redcliffe staff, as well as the players, as we obviously have a fair bit to do with each other.

“The boys have a lot of respect for their opposition players and the staff, so we’re really looking forward to the local derby.”

Caloundra are hoping to welcome back injured captain Tully McLellan and Queensland schoolboys star Zac Garton.

In what looks like a much more evenly contested matchup, Poole hoped Caloundra could stick in the contest for the full 60 minutes.

“When we actually compete for periods of games, we’ve mixed it with everyone we’ve played, but just haven't been able to sustain it for long enough periods of time,” he said.

“We have to dig in from start to finish because we know they’ll be throwing everything at us.”
