Sunshine Coast rugby union talent Nick Chapman has edged another step closer to his Super Rugby dream after signing a developmental contract with the ACT Brumbies for the 2022 season.

Chapman, who moved to Brisbane from the Sunshine Coast in 2015, had endured a long road to reach the elite level after debuting for the Aussies 7s team in March this year.

The former Noosa Dolphins and Sunshine Coast Stingrays scrum half said it had been a whirlwind of a year.

“At the moment it’s pretty much just a developmental contract and then, depending on injuries and what players they have to fill their 36-man squad for the season, will depend on if I get extended or not,” he said.

“It’s been a lot of moving around this year which is all pretty exciting in terms of experiencing different programs and different places.”

Chapman, who began his first week of pre-season training on September 20 and will train with the first team squad until March, had already played alongside Wallabies players Hunter Paisami, Fraser McReight and Brandon Paenga-Amosa.

The 27-year-old said younger players hoping to launch their rugby union dreams could learn from his journey.

“You see a lot of players getting signed straight out of school when they’re young and enter into high-level programs straight away,” he said.

“If you don't get that you kind of get in your head and start to think it might not happen to you because you’ve missed the boat.

“What I say to that is if you put in the continuous hard work, keep showing up and stay focused no matter how long you wait if you really want it and put in the work you’ll get there.”

The current utility back said it was a step closer towards his elite level dream.

“It’s definitely a step closer and I see it as a foot in the door situation towards the Super Rugby competition,” he said

“To be able to surround myself with that top knowledge and skill is great and some of the coaches here will just make my footy even better.

“Getting used to the cold will take some getting used to but the goal is to just go well over this pre-season and perform well by getting the most out of it as I can.

“Hopefully that leads to further opportunities and maybe then getting a cap later in the year.”
