Bowlers dominate Coast’s opening two-dayers

The ball dominated batsmen early as the initial two-day round of SCCA Division 1 fixtures provided two first innings leads when sides struggled to reach three figures.

The ball dominated batsmen early as the initial two-day round of SCCA Division 1 fixtures provided two first innings leads when sides struggled to reach three figures.

Glasshouse and Caboolture closed the day with first innings points and the promise of outright bonuses over Nambour and Caloundra respectively, after easily chasing down small totals at a low cost of wickets.

Nambour’s 136 was passed in 35 overs as Dan Cahill’s unbeaten 97 at stumps reflected last season’s leading runscorer’s return to his favourite format.

Steve Ledger’s winning call for the Cutters, like all other toss victories in the morning, saw his side take the crease, but the captain’s time was limited as Jett Taylor found the edge at the end of the second over.

Runs were rare as Hayden O’Çonnor settled with 43, though the introduction of nagging spinner Heath Fischer for just his second 5-wicket haul for the Rangers added to the pressure, with his 26 overs costing just 42 runs.

Cahill spearheaded the reply with 18 boundaries off 82 deliveries to open up the home side’s options next week.

Caboolture followed a similar path at Henzell Oval, losing the toss to dismiss Caloundra for an even 100, then reaching 1/129 at the close.

The Lighthouses had struggled to 4/76 before Dan Bell turned the lights off with 5/15 as the last four wickets fell for two runs.

Over 40 overs remained for Caboolture before stumps, time enough for Zac Martin and Luke Ryan to show that the Snakes could build runs without the names of Batticciotto and Coffin on the board.

Martin’s unbeaten 89 sets up many options for captain Matt Schubert to pursue on day two, with the one-day final to follow on Sunday.

Lewis Waugh, Gympie’s leader, had no hesitation in batting at Manthie Oval when given the choice against Coolum, but the visitor’s attack kept the scoring down while the Gold struggled to 6/211 all day.

Only ‘keeper Logan Beutel missed out on a turn with the ball as Waugh, 80, and Troy Ashton, 45, ground out a 93 run pairing from 205 deliveries, lifting the home side to 160 after Steve Brady left at 2/67.

Sharks’ captain Josh McLean was best for the visitors with 3/42.

Tewantin-Noosa’s new ball attack of Tom Freshwater and Scott Aufderheide stepped out of the shackles of limited overs to reap nine wickets while Maroochydore scraped up 110 on an enlivened Kev Hackney wicket.

Left-armer Freshwater took the honours with 6/47, his best for the Thunder, as only Zak Willox, with 39, and a resurrected Reid Anderson, 20, kept the scorers busy.

Glasshouse and Caboolture are assured of first innings points at least, so the loser here could end up outside the top four.

The visitors are 5/64 in reply, making the contributions of Jarrod Officer and Dom Taylor, both yet to score, in the opening hour next Saturday so important.
