Round five of the 2025 Sunshine Coast rugby union A-Grade competition has been run and won with a number of impressive results.

After finding themselves trailing 29-14 with just 10 minutes left to play, Caloundra snagged a come-from-behind win over Maroochydore scoring two late tries to finish the match 31-29.

Brothers hosted Caboolture, dominating them in most areas of the game as they went on to win 62-7.

Down South, a jumbled University side travelled to Wynnum with a handful of players (and coaches) absent for the match at captain Luke Kimber’s wedding.

The Barbarians were still too strong for the Bugs claiming a 42-10 result.

Two key round four fixtures were cancelled due to the weather although the match between Wynnum and Caboolture went ahead with Wynnum winning 38-10.

For round six, Noosa will return from the week off with a crucial match against Caloundra, Wynnum will host Maroochydore and University will play Caboolture.

SCRU A-GRADE RD 5 TEAM OF THE WEEK

1. Joe Vanbuskirk (Brothers)

After starting for reserve grade, the Brothers prop came off the bench for A-Grade where he ended up playing a solid 90 minutes.

Produced some huge bumping runs and was key for his pack.

2. Will Greenshill (Caboolture)

The scoreline didn’t favour the Snakes on Saturday but there were a number of impressive and valiant efforts across the field.

Greenshill never backed down from a challenge with a number of continuous effort plays.

He was well supported by his front row partner Josh Dunkley.

3. Isaac Talbot (Maroochydore)

Was a huge driving force all day for the Swans, getting the ball under control and moving forward.

The Swans captain produced a dominant scrum performance.

4. Logan Pickering (Brothers)

Has been in good form so far this season and was strong again on Saturday against Caboolture.

Pickering took plenty of strong carries and booted six successful conversions.

5. Blake Enever (Caloundra)

He’s just a class above and it’s almost unfair to the other second row forwards in the competition.

Once again Enever was huge at the breakdown, took plenty of hit ups and was too powerful at set piece time.

6. Matt Gain (Brothers)

As he has been all season, Gain was right in the thick of things from the opening whistle to the last.

Gain was strong on both sides of the ball, either making huge metres on runs, adding to his tackle count or turning the ball over.

7. Reon Hughes (University)

Filled a big role for his side but worked all day long and comfortably earnt his spot this week.

Hughes was great in cover defence and produced a number of solid chop tackles.

8. Kai Grimley (Wynnum)

Slotted in at right flanker for the Bugs but his aggression and ruck control was really strong against University.

Grimley took a number of gritty carries and created a solid one-two punch with Savili Petelo.

9. Lachie Weir (University)

Was elevated into the starting side this round for his A-Grade run on debut.

Weir directed his side with ease and was sharp at the back of the ruck.

10. Billy Koina (Brothers)

He finished with a hat trick against Caboolture but also controlled the game really well for his forwards and backs.

Koina just flowed through the motions, picking the right options in attack which allowed his teammates to shine.

11. Landry Bezombes (University)

Three tries in the opening 40 minutes means his name was cemented in the team of the week with a half of footy still to play.

His speed, flair and attacking instinct has been huge to start the season and it will only get better as the year rolls on.

12. James Simpson-Te Pairi (Caloundra)

In a back and forth match-up against Maroochydore, Simpson-Te Pairi was Caloundra’s best.

The battle between back lines and edge forwards was gripping and the Lighthouse number 12 played a big part in getting his side on the front foot.

The performance from Mac Burgess off the bench was also key, changing the game for the home side.

13. Charlie Bruce (Maroochydore)

Bruce stood tall and put a stop to everything that was thrown his way against Caloundra.

His defensive efforts were a big reason for the Swans sticking in the contest.

Bruce narrowly edged out University centre Colby Mason, who stepped up as captain this week and even played the last 20 minutes of the match in the back row.

14. Jack Buckley (Brothers)

Seemed to always have space to run out wide, complimented by Koina and inside centre Nakoa Marcroft.

Buckley showed a good turn of foot when scoring a great runaway try on the stroke of halftime as he finished with two for the match.

15. Tye James (Maroochydore)

James has added some flair and experience to the Swans attack this season, showcasing his rugby IQ and kicking game when required.

Unfortunately, a burrowing try late in the game wasn’t enough for his side to hang onto the win.

Honourable Mentions: Nakoa Marcroft (Brothers), Kaleb Talbot (Maroochydore), Oliver Lehmann (Maroochydore), Mac Burgess (Caloundra), Josh Dunkley (Caboolture), Sam Hoffman (Caboolture), Ben Lagi (Caboolture), Savili Petelo (Wynnum), Connor Rolfe (Wynnum), Nathan Thomson (University) and Colby Mason (University).
