Sunshine Coast residents and holiday-makers have expressed their surprise at a popular local beach being crowned one of the most mispronounced in the world.
Peregian Beach, pronounced “per-ridge-ian”, was recently revealed to be the beach with the most mispronounced name in the world after an analysis by pronunciation dictionary Forvo.
The small town is split between the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Shire local government areas and had a population of 4,972 people, according to 2021 Census data.
It shares its name with neighbouring suburb Peregian Springs.
Taking to the streets however, this publication found neither locals nor people holidaying on the Sunshine Coast struggled with pronouncing the word.
South Australian couple Mat Noble and Hayley Zweck, who were visiting the Sunshine Coast, both got it correct first go.
Sunshine Coast locals Erica Osment and Kate London did not struggle with the pronunciation either, along with other locals Tom Welling and Bella Videroni.
“I feel like that’s really weird, it isn’t that difficult to pronounce,” Mr Welling said.
Ms Videroni expressed her surprise at Peregian being the most difficult word to pronounce.
“That’s it? What do people call it (instead)?” She pondered.
Five other Australian beaches made the top 20 most mispronounced beaches list, including Sydney’s Milk Beach, Clovelly Beach, Bondi Beach, Vaucluse Bay and Manly Beach.
