One of the Sunshine Coast’s most iconic pubs will undergo a major makeover to turn it into the region’s newest brewery as a world-famous Western Australian brand hits the region.

A development application lodged by Memorial Drive Hospitality and Innovative Planning Solutions to Sunshine Coast Council this month revealed plans to redevelop Joe’s Watering Hole in Eumundi.

The property was bought by West Australian company Good Drinks Australia for $5.3m in September 2021 with the intention of building a Queensland brewery for it’s popular Matso’s brand.

The company – with its iconic Broome pub – is best known for its chilli and mango beers and ginger beer and has envisioned its Eumundi brewery would be keeping in line with the company’s strategy to create up to five venue breweries in key Australian markets.

The application requests approval from council to turn the Memorial Ave bar into a hub for the Eumundi community, offering a beer garden, brewery, alfresco dining and bistro.

The plans state the total gross floor area would be 830sq m while the total outdoor dining area is expected to be 213sq m.

The plans would also refurbish the existing two-storey heritage public bar and accommodation on-site, while the existing bottle shop and pool room would be demolished to make way for the beer garden and brewery.

“The redevelopment will include a facelift and installation of a fully functioning brewery that can produce the entire suite of products that Matso’s has become famous for,” Good Drinks Australia chief operating officer Aaron Heary told the Daily in September, 2021.

“The existing traditional front bar will be retained and feature prominently in our new Queensland venue.”

Accommodation will also be upgraded from four bedrooms to six bedrooms above the public bar and only five car spaces will be available on site.

Good Drinks Australia aims to brew an additional two million litres per year of Matso’s brands for the broader Queensland market.

Eumundi continues to attract further development, with a recent application lodged in 2021 including a new supermarket and a service station.
