A major housing project on the Sunshine Coast will deliver 63 new social homes by May 2026, the state government revealed on Tuesday.
Part of the Crisafulli government’s commitment to delivering 53,500 social and community homes by 2044, the new development in Birtinya will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom units.
All homes in the project will be built to meet the needs of seniors and people with disability, and communal areas in the complex will help create a sense of community for residents.
The government’s 2025-26 Budget included $43.9m for expanding social and community housing on the Sunshine Coast, with 240 homes already in construction or under contract to be delivered.
Housing Minister Sam O’Connor said the government would contribute $33.55m to the Birtinya development, covering “over 90 per cent of the bill”.
“The Crisafulli Government’s first Budget delivers $5.6bn for social and community housing — the biggest investment Queensland has ever seen — and this Birtinya development shows what that funding will deliver,” Mr O’Connor said.
“With other local projects in the pipeline, it means accessible, secure homes for more vulnerable Queenslanders to have a place to call home.”
Development manager for BlueCHP, the not-for-profit community housing provider working on the project, Ben Ferris, said the new development would deliver homes anyone could be “proud to live in”.
Mr Ferris also said the complex would provide “wraparound services for those who need additional help”.
“If they have illiteracy, we can bring someone in to help them out with that, with training, with accounting, all sorts of things,” he said.
“There’s the opportunity for someone to not just live here but also grow.”
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said providing safe, affordable homes for more Queenslanders was a top priority.
“Our first Budget is delivering record investment in social and community housing, with the Sunshine Coast a key focus,“ Mr Bleijie said.
“Through our housing construction pipeline we’re unlocking more housing supply across the Sunshine Coast region.”
