A controversial Sunshine Coast transport project has been shelved after the Australian Government pulled $160m worth of funding in late 2023.
The Sunshine Mwy, Mooloolah River Interchange upgrade has long been the subject of controversy after hundreds of properties in Mountain Creek were resumed, with several more on Kawana Island earmarked to join them.
Stage one of the project stalled significantly in late-2023 after it was announced the Federal Government had withdrawn $160m of funding support.
The Caloundra Transport Corridor Upgrade was axed as well.
It was hoped the Mooloolah River Interchange project could be salvaged even after the crucial funding was pulled, but a Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesman confirmed on Monday the project had since been shelved.
“While the (Mooloolah River Interchange) Upgrade project remains a priority for the Queensland Government, it cannot be delivered without Federal support,” they said.
“The Queensland Government continues to invest heavily in important transport projects in the growing Sunshine Coast region, including Bruce Highway upgrades, the Beerburrum to Nambour rail line and the Bells Creek Arterial Road.”
The spokesman said the homes acquired for the Mooloolah River Interchange project will be retained for future upgrades, including the Sunshine Coast Direct Rail Line.
The first stage of the Mooloolah River Interchange project was set to create a new overpass connecting Nicklin Way to Brisbane Rd at Mooloolaba, provide a new road connecting Karawatha Dr at Mountain Creek and Brisbane Rd at Mooloolaba, all with footpaths and bike lanes for pedestrians and bike riders.
Future stages, which were yet to be funded, included a new Mooloolah River crossing linking Kawana Way to the Sunshine Motorway, the Mooloolah River Interchange and upgrades to the Sunshine Motorway.
