A 27-year-old Sunshine Coast man was on parole when he committed a series of new crimes, Maroochydore Magistrates Court has heard.
Little Mountain’s Dylan Mark Cheers pleaded guilty on Friday to 11 charges including two counts of break and enter, three of entering a premises with intent, wearing a face mask or disguise with the intent to commit an indictable offence, and five drug-related offences - three of which were possession.
Police prosecutor Jeanette Grigoris told the court Cheers had a significant criminal history, dating back to 2016 and in the past nine years, had appeared in court 12 times, including for numerous serious property offences.
His criminal record included previous prison sentences, with terms of two and a half years in 2017, three years in 2022, and another two and a half years in 2023 for similar offences.
Sergeant Grigoris noted Cheers had been on parole following his 2023 sentence when he committed the latest offences in August 2024.
She said being imprisoned and then being on parole was “no deterrence” to him.
The court heard Cheers caused significant damage at Mammoth storage, where he broke into at least two storage units.
The damage caused exceeded $22,000.
“People had stored their personal belongings and where they should feel that their property is safe,” Sgt Grigoris said.
Despite attempting to hide his identity with a face mask, Cheers was identified by his distinctive tattoos on CCTV footage, the court was told.
Cheers’ defence lawyer, Katie Paterson told the court her client had no capacity to pay restitution and had been in prison for 159 days since his arrest.
She added that he had relapsed after encountering an old associate but had been improving since his last stint in prison.
“He hasn’t fully stopped using (drugs) but has reduced his amount and frequency,” Ms Paterson said.
The court heard Cheers started using drugs recreationally at 18, a habit that worsened out of frustration due to his inability to see his son.
Cheers was given a head sentence of three years, with the 159 days declared as time served.
He will be eligible for parole on July 10, 2026.
