John Kerr death: Gympie man, 27, charged with murder

The identity of a Gympie man now charged with the murder of an 87-year-old Noosa grandfather allegedly killed on his morning walk has been revealed in court documents.

Noosa man John Kerr died after an alleged attack near Hastings Street on Sunday.

Mr Kerr was allegedly set upon and killed during a morning walk at Noosa Heads on June 18.

Bystanders rushed to help him but he died on a boardwalk just metres from Hastings Street. He was found unconscious and with significant facial injuries.

Court documents sighted by News Corp Australia confirmed 27-year-old Gympie man Ryo Jay Anan had been charged with Mr Kerr’s murder.

It is believed Mr Anan and Mr Kerr did not know each other.

Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Mansfield said during a press conference on Monday, July 3, that Mr Anan was found within the vicinity of Mr Kerr’s alleged murder, but was arrested and taken into custody in relation to another assault.

Senior Sergeant Mansfield declined to comment further on the specifics of the investigation into Mr Kerr’s alleged murder.

Mr Anan was later charged with seriously assaulting a person over 60 on the corner of Claude Batten Dr and Hastings St at Noosa Heads. This matter was mentioned in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 19, but Mr Anan did not appear.

He was scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court for the murder charge on July 3. His matter was briefly mentioned and adjourned until July 24.

He was remanded in custody with no application for bail.
