A Eudlo apprentice has narrowly avoided jail after hatching a half-baked heist where he did a snatch and run of a $39,000 bracelet from a jewellery store.

Jarvis Anthony David Henricks cooked up the scheme with his co-accused the night prior to July 29 before conducting reconnaissance at a jewellery store in Sunshine Plaza at Maroochydore.

Police prosecutor Mel Pyke told the court on Thursday how the 18-year-old scoped out the jewellery store by sending videos and photos of its layout before asking to have a peak at the piece of jewellery about 4pm.

Sergeant Pyke said Henricks looked at the bracelet twice, once in the viewing room and the other on the glass counter. He took photos of it on his phone, including its price tag of $39,999, and made a phone call in between viewings.

The court heard all of a sudden the 18-year-old snatched the bracelet and bolted from the store.

He entered an awaiting uber allegedly with his co-accused however due to quick police action, they were intercepted close by.

Henricks was identified from CCTV, and told police his co-accused allegedly handed him the bracelet to hide the item when they were pulled over. He said he was in fear of the other man.

The Eudlo teenager said he was unaware of the value on the bracelet and alleged his co-accused was going to pay him $60,000 to take the bracelet and conceal it from police.

A search of his phone allegedly revealed messages between the two men which included photos of the shop in the hours prior, and them discussing “pre-emptively” selling the bracelet on Facebook Marketplace.

The bracelet was recovered.

Henricks also admitted in court to stealing perfume from Myer at Sunshine Plaza, trespassing there when he was banned, attempting to sell Tesla chargers that were not his to Cash Converters Maroochydore, before selling the same business a bluetooth speaker that was not his property.

Sergeant Pyke said Henricks’ attempted heist was clearly motivated by greed, and told the court his co-accused was yet to be sentenced.

Duty lawyer Breanna Bowtell said Henricks, who worked as an apprentice mechanic but previously as a butcher, was homeless at the time. She said he met his co-accused through his “homeless associates”, and stated the teenager was struggling with his family life and his emotions.

Ms Bowtell said he was remorseful and was aware of how his life choices led him down his current path.

Magistrate Rod Madsen plainly told the Eudlo teen it was lucky the police found him so quickly as the consequences would’ve been much worse, indicating it would have been actual jail time “for sure”.

Mr Madsen labelled it “out and out greed” and said there was “some thinking” involved, although clearly it “wasn’t very good”.

Henricks pleaded guilty to seven charges including one count of entering a premises to commit an indictable offence, stealing and three of trespass.

He was sentenced to 12 months’ jail, suspended for 18 months. The teenager was also placed on 12 months’ probation.
