A Fortitude Valley man will continue to spend time behind bars after being refused bail for allegedly fleeing police in a stolen car.

Jackson Tyler Lawrence made an unsuccessful bail application in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court last week where he faces six charges including on two counts of receiving tainted property, and one of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Defence solicitor Michael Robinson told the court the 22-year-old was listed for a sentence on Friday.

However, Lawrence had three fresh charges before the court.

Due to the fresh charges, Mr Robinson told the court he would apply for his client’s bail instead.

Police prosecutor Jeanette Grigoris objected to the Fortitude Valley man’s bail and said he had a significant history, where she claimed he was a repeat offender. She alleged the latest police facts were of concern.

She alleged the 22-year-old avoided police while driving in a stolen vehicle with pilfered licence plates. He was later arrested at Maroochydore on January 28.

The police prosecutor said police later went to Lawrence’s dad’s home where the Fortitude Valley man refused to answer the door.

Lawrence in fact locked himself in an apartment and hid in a bedroom.

Sergeant Grigoris said Lawrence threw the keys to the stolen vehicle from an 11th floor balcony. These keys belonged to a vehicle stolen from a Morayfield shopping centre, while the plates were taken from a Kallangur address. They could not be retrieved.

He was taken into custody on January 29 and has there ever since.

Mr Robinson said despite Lawrence’s criminal history, the 22-year-old had never breached bail or failed to appear in court.

He told the court the Fortitude Valley man had a meth problem but was keen to rehabilitate himself.

The defence lawyer said police alleged Lawrence was found with the stolen car and plates in Maroochydore, however there was no evidence he took the plates from the Kallangur address.

The court heard the 22-year-old would also abide by strict conditions including using an ankle monitor and claimed Lawrence also eventually let police into his home.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist however was not swayed and refused Lawrence bail.

His matters will return to court on May 14.
