A Mount Coolum man has been jailed for his acts of “gratuitous” street violence after he launched himself at a man leaving a nightclub.
Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday Andrew Ashley Larfield’s victim needed a root canal to fix his teeth after he was subjected to a brutal haymaker assault outside Parental Guidance nightclub in Maroochydore on January 6.
Police prosecutor Shane Raison said the 31-year-old was at the Ocean St nightclub about 1.30am when his former friend allegedly assaulted the victim.
Senior Sergeant Raison said the cabinetmaker’s associate was removed from the nightclub by security, with Larfield following him out into the street.
In CCTV footage shown to the court, the victim was told to leave the premises a short time later and walked through the entrance when Larfield ran towards him and struck him in the mouth with a closed fist.
Larfield rained five more punches onto the victim until he fell to the ground unconscious.
Security then intervened and restrained the cabinet-maker.
Senior Sergeant Raison said the victim had no recollection of the attack after the first slog, and suffered cuts to his cheek and gums, swelling to the side of his face and had three loose teeth.
The man also sustained a fracture to the bone structure where his teeth are seated.
The court was told he needed a root canal to fix three teeth, with his victim impact statement discussing the out of pocket expenses and loss of wages he incurred after being injured.
The police prosecutor said it was “gratuitous” street violence and said Larfield was not associated with the previous alleged incident which led to his former friend being evicted from the club.
The court heard Larfield was originally charged with grievous bodily harm however this was downgraded to assault, which he pleaded guilty to on Wednesday.
Defence lawyer Bernard Bradley said Larfield came from a “challenging” childhood in Brisbane, but made a fresh start in his later years when he moved to the Sunshine Coast.
Mr Bradley said the 31-year-old was a father and had a partner who was pregnant with his second, and worked as a cabinet maker at Caloundra.
Larfield’s lawyer said the Mount Coolum man had little memory of the incident and suspected he may have been spiked or witnessed something inside, however Larfield instructed he could not pinpoint why the assault occurred. Mr Bradley however said Larfield was remorseful with it being out of character.
Magistrate Chris Callaghan said it appeared Ocean St was somewhat “notorious” for alcohol fuelled violence, and cited how Larfield was only stopped due to security intervening.
“You’re an angry person it seems,” Mr Callaghan said.
Larfield was jailed for 12 months, with a parole release date set at November 20.
He must also pay $2000 compensation to the victim.
