Brock Thomas James Mason sexually assaults woman in Ocean St, Maroochydore

A Sunshine Coast apprentice told police investigating a sexual assault to ‘get a warrant’ after he indecently touched a woman while out in the Safe Night Precinct.

A Maroochydore apprentice tradie has not apologised to a woman he sexually assaulted in Ocean St, telling investigating officers to “f--- off” and get a warrant.

Brock Thomas James Mason, 24, was in the Safe Night Precinct in Maroochydore about 9pm on May 22, 2021, when he walked up behind the woman outside the Post Office Bar, the court heard.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court was told the tradie raised his arm between the victim’s legs and touched the woman “forward of her buttocks” causing her to yell in pain.

Police prosecutor Mick Ruddiman said the victim made a complaint to police the next day, where she said Mason had “hit her with force” between her legs.

Sergeant Ruddiman said investigators contacted Mason who said in so many words he wouldn’t help with their investigations.

“He told police to ‘get f---ed’, ‘he’s not attending the police station’ and for police to get a warrant, which we did and he’s here now,” Sergeant Ruddiman said.

The court heard Mason had not apologised to the victim, with the assault causing her “pain”, “shame” and “humiliation”.

Solicitor Chantelle Allen said the 24-year-old apprentice had been seeking help for his mental health and was recovering from a bad break up at the time of the incident.

Ms Allen said Mason had not returned to Ocean St since the incident.

Mason pleaded guilty to sexual assault and was ordered to complete 150 hours’ community service.

He must also pay $700 compensation to the victim.

No conviction was recorded.
