A young woman who grabbed the throat of a man in a alcohol-fuelled attack on a group of pub goers was a passenger in a car that swerved to toward them on Anzac Day, a court has heard.

In CCTV footage played in court Angelique Bronte Crang can be seen grabbing a man by the throat and attempting to knee him before attacking other men in the Cooroy Hotel smoking area on April 25.

“She pulls their hair, grabs by their collar, strikes at them, throws drinks on them,” Police prosecutor Alison Johnstone said.

Sergeant Johnstone said after being removed from the hotel Crang verbally abused the group of men unknown to her while they walked home.

Sergeant Johnstone said Crang ran up to one of the men walking on a footpath, punched him in the face and pushed him over before throwing multiple punches at another man.

Crang was later a passenger in a car that swerved towards the group of men, mounting footpaths, running over wheelie bins and into bushes.

Sergeant Johnstone said Crang screamed abuse at the “fearful” group as they jumped out of the way to avoid being hit.

The court heard Crang‘s behaviour began after her male friend became agitated and verbally aggressive when he saw Crang talking to one of the victims.

She said none of the men retaliated against Crang and repeatedly tried to defuse the situation.

The court heard the group of men had returned home to a Tulip Street address where they were socialising till 11.30pm when they heard Crang outside.

The court heard Crang began screaming abuse at the group and was involved in another scuffle.

Crang was sentenced for five offences including four public nuisance offences in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Sergeant Johnstone said while the men hadn’t pressed assault charges Crang’s actions were a serious example of public nuisance and said a sentence of imprisonment was appropriate.

The court heard Crang was on a nine-month probation order for drug offences in March this year and had previously been ordered to complete community service in 2019.

Defence lawyer Katie Paterson said Crang suffered from foetal alcohol syndrome, had lost her mum to suicide and was the victim of a home invasion in 2016.

The court heard the “heavily intoxicated” Cooroy woman had no like offending on her history and had said she was walking home to her father’s house when she, coincidentally, ended up on the same street where the men were socialising.

She said Crang hadn’t been charged with assault and suggested a fine was appropriate for her offending.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said Crang’s hardships were no excuse for her behaviour and said she should avoid alcohol.

Crang was fined $700 for her offences and had her probation period extended.

It will now end in September 2022.

No conviction was recorded.

The alleged driver of the car has not been located.
