A magistrate has warned a man who drove twice with meth in his system while on a suspended sentence for stealing that the “meth slope is a slippery slope”.

Adhamh Dale Aleksandr Mcdonald, 35, of Sunshine Beach pleaded guilty in the Noosa Magistrates Court on August 9, 2022, to two counts of driving with methamphetamine in his system.

Police prosecutor Alison Johnstone said on March 19, 2022, police were patrolling when they saw a car on the trade access ramp at Bunnings in Noosaville.

She said the defendant, who said he drove there, tested positive for meth in his system on that date.

Sergeant Johnstone said Mcdonald also tested positive for meth in his system when pulled over by police on April 17, 2022, on Bicentennial Drive in Sunshine Beach.

The police prosecutor said the defendant committed the two driving offences while on a 22-month suspended prison sentence handed down on March 8, 2022.

She said the suspended sentence was for a break-in at Noosaville carpet shop, where an unknown offender stole about $10,000 of property and when police searched Mcdonald’s home they found some items from the shop.

Sergeant Johnstone said police, in a separate incident, also found air-conditioning equipment stolen from a padlocked container in the Sunshine Beach State High School at the defendant’s home.

Lawyer Bernard Bradley said the currently unemployed mechanic had remained abstinent from drugs since the April 17, 2022 offence.

He said his client was keen to get back to work.

The lawyer also said that the nature of the driving offences in their own right were not trivial, but were when compared to the break and enter offences.

Magistrate Christopher Callaghan said if the defendant was going to have any sort of decent life, he would need to give up the drug.

“It’s a really slippery slope, the meth slope,” he said.

On each of the drug-related driving offences, he was fined $300 and disqualified from driving for six months.

The magistrate also extended the suspended sentence by a month for each offence.
