It was an unforgettable occasion for athletes from around the world as they crossed the finish line for the Sunshine Coast Ironman 70.3 triathlon.
The Mooloolaba Esplanade was packed with supporters cheering on their family members, loved ones and other competitors racing along the triathlon course.
Nick Thompson, from Western Australia, was the first of more than 1000 competitors to cross the finish line, followed shortly after by Nicholas Free. Third place was snapped up by Mitch Kibby.
New Zealand competitor Rebecca Clarke was s the first woman to complete the course.
She was followed by Radka Kahlefeldt and Sophie Perry in second and third respectively.
The achievements were celebrated on the podiums with medals, bouquets and a champagne shower.
It was the first Ironman for 800 competitors, with a total of 1800 registered for the Mooloolaba event’s 10th anniversary.
Some athletes have been competing in the annual event from the very beginning – the oldest competitor took part at the age of 73, while others as young as 18 entered for the first time.
