MY SAY: Who cares what's on passports of our MPs

CONSTITUTIONAL saga over MP dual citizenships is another handy distraction for them from the real business of running our country.

I WON'T be audacious enough to say I speak for everyone, I know I don't, but I reckon I'd have a fair majority behind me in thinking this Section 44 Constitutional saga is an absolute joke.

The Greens were hamm- ered from pillar to post after Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters were revealed to be less Australian than Vegemite (oh wait, hang on).

Outrage quickly quietened right down when it became clear the Coalition didn't have its own backyard in order, before it had started playing judge, jury and executioner.

When our own Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce appeared to be more All Black than outback you could almost hear from Auckland the eggs hitting faces of those in the blue ties seated in Canberra.

I think we all accepted long ago that Malcolm Roberts is not from here.

Whether he is from another country on Planet Earth remains to be seen though.

Some say the UK, but I'd be expecting his passport to reveal Mars as his place of origin.

Fiona Nash could be in strife with the discovery she is more haggis than Hills Hoist, and Matt Canavan has been told he is an Italian citizen.

The Canavan revelation was full of surprises.

Firstly, the Shane Warne playbook being dusted off and wheeled out, blaming 'mum', was a real throwback.

But secondly, I had Canavan pegged down for an Indian if not a true-blue Aussie.

His devoted support of Adani's Carmichael coal mine had me convinced.

Not surprising was the fact the Greens Senators resigned their seats, while others suddenly decided that was not necessary upon being caught out themselves.

The only questions remaining for me now are: Where exactly will it be revealed Bill Shorten is from, and why do we actually care about all of this?

Our head of state is a foreigner. We claim Russell Crowe, Crowded House and any half-decent rugby league player regardless of birthplace.

Does it really matter if our politicians hold dual citizenship?

If this is the absolute minimum benchmark, surely it's creating the strongest possible argument for creating a republic immediately and breaking away from the British Empire?

Much like the same sex marriage debate, this whole saga has been a sideshow, a circus act, a beautiful distraction for us, as the country slides further into debt, housing affordability becomes non-existent and welfare dependency climbs.
