I was in the pub, in a bar frequented by men.

In fact I was only one of two women in there, and I was filling out a TAB docket to put a bet on a horse. A passion for horse racing is in the blood.

I had to squeeze up next to a couple of good-looking 40-something blokes to write. Just as I started, one bloke turned to the other and said "I've been busting for a pee all the way from Casino”.

Now I'm not sure what this means. Either a) I have become invisible b) He doesn't really have any manners and/or 3) Aussie guys are pretty pathetic flirts.

After I heard about his urgent bladder problem I wasn't sure where to look.

This is ironic since, physically, he was just my type.

Charm, guys, it's underrated. A little flirting never killed anyone. Women love it.

Try not to insult, unintentionally.

My sister, for example, having bought an expensive new perfume, was feeling quite good about herself when she was doing her grocery shopping.

"You smell great,” said hunky young thing. "Just like my mother.” Ouch!

A million column inches have been written on corny lines. Use one maybe.

Even if you only get a laugh, you'll still have broken the ice. Perhaps stay away from terms of endearment like Mel Gibson's "sugar tits” as a way of making headway.
