Nazi symbols deface Fisher MP Andrew Wallace’s election material

A well-known federal election candidate has experienced a vicious attack on his election material, with signs covered in outlawed Nazi symbols.

MP Andrew Wallace targeted by Nazi graffiti attack

A federal election candidate has been “shaken” by outlawed graffiti appearing on his campaign posters.

Andrew Wallace, the incumbent LNP Federal Member for Fisher, has been the target of a Nazi graffiti attack.

A trailer bearing his campaign corflutes was graffitied with the “most appalling” Nazi symbols at the weekend.

Mr Wallace’s team had set up a trailer with corflutes strapped to the sides near the duck pond on Caloundra Rd.

To their horror, they discovered that sometime on Saturday night, all the corflutes had been defaced with swastikas carved across Mr Wallace’s face.

In a video posted to his social media on Sunday, Mr Wallace condemned the act.

“I want to send a message to those who’ve done this,” Mr Wallace said.

“This is not okay. This is not Australian.

“This Nazi cross is the symbol that demonstrated the death of six million Jews.

“Shame on you.”

Although he is not Jewish, Mr Wallace is the chair of the Israel Allies Caucus in Australia and said this was highly offensive to the Jewish community and to himself personally.

At a press conference on the opposite side of Caloundra Rd today, March 31, Mr Wallace said he was “shaken” about the incident and would ask the police to investigate.

“To find Nazi symbols on my signs is an incredible slap in the face,” he said.

In January last year, the federal government passed the counter-terrorism legislation amendment outlawing performing the Nazi salute in public or to publicly display, or trade in, Nazi hate symbols.

“It is a Commonwealth offence to draw a swastika on anything in this country,” Mr Wallace said.

“To do this at the beginning of an election, on an elected official’s signs, this is not who we are as a country.”

Mr Wallace was not sure of the motivations behind the graffiti attack but did not consider the act as an attack on or expression of dissatisfaction with the LNP, but rather a personal strike at him.

“I am a staunch defender of Israel, whether that’s why they’ve highlighted me and tried to isolate me and pick me out, I don’t know,” Mr Wallace said.
“It’s not what Australia is all about and they stand condemned by the vast majority of people on the Sunshine Coast.

“I am going to speak to the police as a Commonwealth offence has been committed and I’d like to see the perpetrators tracked down and prosecuted.

“To do what they have done carries a term of imprisonment.

“It is an aberration, it is absolutely disgraceful.”

Police were contacted for comment.
