A man in his 60s has died and an investigation is under way after a boating tragedy in Mooloolaba overnight.

Water Police have launched an investigation into the incident after a boat struck a pylon near a bridge on Brisbane Rd just before 12.30am Sunday.

A man in his 60s – the only person on board – suffered critical injuries and was tragically later declared dead at the scene.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said onlookers saw the man’s tinnie strike a pylon and called police before helping start CPR on the man alongside police officers first on scene, before paramedics arrived and took charge.

It was understood the man suffered significant head injuries and was declared dead at the scene despite best efforts to revive him.

The incident was reported on the Brisbane Rd bridge crossing of the Mooloolah River near Culbara St and Bindaree Cres.

More to come.
