Emergency services rushed to treat two seriously injured men after a two-boat crash off Mooloolaba on Saturday.

A Queensland Police spokesman said water police and the Mooloolaba Coast Guards responded to reports that two vessels had collided five nautical miles east of Point Cartwright at 3.30pm.

A total of four people were involved in the crash that included a commercial vehicle.

Two males in their 40s were taken back to the Mooloolaba boat ramp before being assessed by critical care paramedics and taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said one of the men was in a serious condition with significant leg injuries while the second man was in a serious but stable condition with a head injury.

A Sunshine Coast University Hospital spokeswoman said one of the men had been discharged from hospital and the other was in a stable condition as of Sunday morning.

Sunshine Coast Water Police Senior Constable Mark Muddiman said investigations were ongoing but understood the late afternoon sun may allegedly be the most likely cause behind the collision.

It is understood the commercial vessel is from Hervey Bay and had hit the small 4.7m recreational boat which was anchored at time of impact.

“It appears because of sun strike the other vessel has driven over the top of the other one,” he said.

“With the sun he just hasn’t seen them.”

He said the recreational boat had sunk in at least 50m of water as a result of the collision.

Snr Const Muddiman said of the two injured men, one was a Sunshine Coast local while the other was from Brisbane.

Mooloolaba Coast Guard assisted the commercial vessel to the Parkyn Parade boat ramp where water police spoke to those involved.

Snr Const Muddiman said along with police, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority would investigate the matter.
