Monster waves are forecast to smash parts of the Queensland coastline as a result of Tropical Cyclone Jasper with authorities urging potential beachgoers to exercise caution.

The first cyclone of the season, Tropical Cyclone Jasper has formed over the Solomon Sea and is currently strengthening.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, it is expected to become a severe tropical cyclone by Thursday, December 7, tracking south-southwest into the Coral Sea, before moving towards the Queensland coastline early next week.

The latest modelling from the Bureau shows it could intensify into a category 4 system on Friday, December 8.

As a result, Meteorologist Patch Clapp said there is expected to be an increase in swell across the Sunshine Coast and surrounds.

“We’re talking about a four to five foot swell, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a little bit higher than that,” he said.

“They’re definitely the chances those winds wrap around it, to see a bit of an increase in swell around the Sunshine Coast, increase in wind as well as we move sort of through the weekend.

“It really depends on how quickly it moves through the Coral Sea.”

A Surf Life Saving Queensland spokeswoman urged those visiting the beach in the coming days to be vigilant and consider their need to enter the water.

“Surf Life Saving Queensland will continue to liaise with the Bureau of Meteorology and provide advice as updated information becomes available on the impact on beach conditions,” the spokeswoman said.

“Beachgoers are asked to only swim at patrolled beaches during patrol hours, importantly adhere to any beach signage and follow the instructions from surf lifesavers and lifeguards.”
