An apprentice carpenter has been punished in court after he stormed a Baringa home and bashed a man with a sock containing a billiard ball.

Luca Julius Arthur Warren, now 21, was given three years prison to be released on parole immediately after pleading guilty in Maroochydore District Court to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault, wilful damage and burglary whilst armed and in company.

Judge Nathan Jarro said that at 9.30pm on March 19, 2020, Warren and a group of others knocked on the door of a house in Baringa.

“One of the occupants opened her front door and she observed an unknown male and you holding a sock which contained a billiard ball,” Judge Jarro told the court.

Warren’s co-accused Traydan John Dahlstrom, who has since been dealt with in court, barged through the door with Warren and the unknown man.

The swinging door squashed the complainant's nine year old son.

Judge Jarro said one of the people in the house grabbed a baseball bat from the garage in an attempt to defend himself.

“Dahlstrom swung a punch towards the one who had the baseball bat before being struck to the head with the bat,” he said.

“Dahlstrom then struck the owner of the house in the mouth on left side of her face with a closed fist.”

Dahlstrom pleaded guilty to five offences when he was sentenced in February including entering a dwelling with intent by break using violence while armed in company.

Warren and Dahlstrom continued to assault the man and Warren swung the sock filled with the billiard ball and struck him in the shoulder, lower back, legs and cheek bone.

The ball was also swung into the walls, causing several holes and dents before the group fled in their Mitsubishi Pajero.

Judge Jarro said the victim received “significant” injuries as a result of the home invasion.

“People deserve to be secure in their own homes at night and they certainly don’t need complete strangers coming in to inflict violence,” he said.

Warren’s defence barrister said his client was in his final year of his carpentry apprenticeship and had distanced himself from his associates.

Warren was born in Nambour, had a dysfunctional upbringing, completed school up until Year 11 and had no prior criminal history.

The 21-year-old had since joined a church and found faith while completing counselling and a domestic violence program.

Convictions were recorded.
