A popular Sunshine Coast church, preparing to open a new venue, has applied to change development conditions after saying a “security risk” could threaten the multimillion-dollar property.

Life Church Queensland, which currently operates from a riverfront property at Warana, has submitted a new development request to the Sunshine Coast Council regarding their large-scale project at Mons.

Plans for the new church, The Sanctuary, were first submitted to the council in 2020 after Life Church bought two large adjoining lots in 2019.

According to property data, the 2.33ha block at 59 Tanawha Tourist Drive was sold for $1.2m, while the 3.23ha block at 75 Tanawha Tourist Drive sold for $2.03m.

The new mega-sized church will hold nearly 800 people, according to the original plans, along with nearly 300 car spaces.

The Sanctuary at Mons spans over two properties which were bought by Life Church Queensland in 2019 for a combined total of more than $3m.

The planning report submitted to the council on Monday claimed security risks had been raised with the current design, requiring the removal of an approval condition set by the council.

“The Life Church has identified through operational workshops that due to the property’s vehicular access not being gated outside of operating hours, there is a security risk to the facility,” the planning report stated.

A condition imposed by the council upon the church’s approval stated there was to be no security gate on the venue’s car park.

Life Church submitted last month, the proposed security gates would only be used outside of the church’s operating hours.

It also requested the condition stating Life Church must construct a centre traffic island from Tanawha Tourist Drive, be replaced with a line-marked island instead to allow for vehicles to turnaround.

The property was formally the home of the Forest Glen Deer Sanctuary.
