LETTERS: Disgust over One Nation 'dildo' school claims

LETTER writers had plenty to say on One Nation leader Steve Dickson's claims Queensland schools were teaching Grade 4 students about dildos and masturbation.

DICKSON GOES TOO FAR

AGAIN the One Nation Party reveals themselves as under- educated nasty windbags by making untrue allegations of sex education in Queensland schools (Daily, November 13).

Steve Dickson deserves to lose the seat of Buderim because of his unstable views on education and the narrowness of his social comprehension.

Yes, the Safe Schools program is controversial, but boy do we need it in Queensland where ill-informed views and the banning of life and sex issues have corroded our communities. Remember when domestic violence was a taboo subject and the damage this did (and is doing) to marriages and families.

What I admire about Safe Schools is the "respect" that students are taught in their dealings with themselves, the different sexes, and other identity orientations, cultural or otherwise.

One Nation exhibits no respect for sensitive life and sex issues and they deserve to be given a firm rebuttal at the ballot box that their myopic views will not be tolerated. We need broadly educated and open-minded parliamentary representatives to be a better society.

I FIND it hard to comprehend what would be going through a person's mind to suggest that Australian school teachers are teaching young school children how to masturbate and how to strap on a dildo as part of their teachings for an education.

If I were a teacher or a parent allowing it to happen and to not be tarred with the same brush, I would be asking for proof of where and when this happens.

I WAS disgusted to read Steve Dickson's most recent comments regarding sex education in schools. He stated that young girls are being taught how to masturbate and also shown how to strap on a dildo.

This is "post truth politics" at its worst.

The aim appears to have been to create outrage with false, inflammatory comments and hope that supporters fail to critically analyse his attention- seeking remarks. I hope that he is forced to provide a prime time or front page apology to all Queensland teachers, parents and students.

Exposing this type of politics needs to receive more attention from the media.

Perhaps Mr Dickson would consider taking on the responsibilities of a state political leader.

This is not a federal election where one would expect the federal party leader to take control. He needs to venture outside his electorate and deliver the people of Queensland some well formulated policies. He and Ms Hanson have plenty of rhetoric but very little substance. They state what is currently controversial or problematic in the hope that it strikes a chord with voters. However, they offer no valid solutions.

However, firstly, an apology please Mr Dickson.

ONE NATION THREAT

THE long-term success for One Nation is a disaster for the Australian economy as the centre of the world's financial power moves from America to China and India.

This is not to say the US will decline, it may stay as it is, or improve, but its percentage of world GDP will lessen.

The "Nation's" rhetoric is so profoundly prejudicial to our realignment with this movement as to make it likely we will be excluded from the benefits of this vast expansion of trade.

As China revitalises the Silk Road trade routes, so the countries along this will be fostered as candidates for all the trade and development China and India will bring.

Africa is being developed by China as the source of much of the commodities we current supply it.

Many of the people on that continent are Muslim.

To continue to allow the impression to be that we are so benighted as to condemn a people or a religion for the actions of a few, will not endear us to those we need for our future development.

Unless we fully embrace the changes to the world we need to live and prosper in, we will be left behind to stagnate in a moribund economy, regretting our lost opportunity to be part of a Brave New World.

That will be One Nation's legacy, not a series of populist promises that signifies nothing.
