RITA and David Allara made the move south from Townsville, having owned their own home for the past 25 years.

They'd heard the Coast rental market was incredibly tough, and decided to put forward an offer hard to refuse.

Mrs Allara said they offered three months' rent up front, which, when their references checked out, paved the way for them to move in straight away to their Mahia Tce, Kings Beach unit.

"We had heard it was going to be hard," she said.

Mrs Allara lived in the area about three decades ago, and said it was a "whole different market" now to when she was last here.

She was told $350 per week wouldn't get them much down here, and they ended up securing their new Mahia Rise unit for $495 per week.

Mrs Allara said they hadn't wanted to hesitate and miss out on securing the unit, having decided to return to the region a little earlier than expected.

Now only 120m away from Kings Beach, cafes and restaurants, Mrs Allara said they loved their new place.

"It's absolutely gorgeous," she said.

"It's slightly more than we wanted (price).

"(But) it's beautiful."
