Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms could disrupt Caloundra Music Festival

Caloundra Music Festival goers have been warned of an approaching weather system with heavy rainfall and potentially severe thunderstorms that could play havoc on the three-day event.

Wild weather hits the Sunshine Coast

Heavy rainfall and potentially severe thunderstorms could play havoc for the upcoming three-day Caloundra Music Festival, the weather bureau has warned.

Forecaster Helen Kirkup said the majority of rain was predicted to hit the region on Thursday and Friday, before heading out to sea by the weekend.

It comes as showers and storms soaked the region on Sunday with one isolated total in the hinterland reaching 60mm.

Ms Kirkup said the system was over South Australia and was building northeast towards the Sunshine Coast and southeast.

She said Thursday and Friday were the best chances of activity.

Caloundra Music Festival starts on Friday featuring the likes of Ball Park Music, Xavier Rudd, Sneaky Sound System and Sycco.

Sunshine Coast acts include Mason Hope, Sugarbag Blonde, Flaskas and Dear Doonan.

“Thursday and Friday together there could be 20-30mm easily over the two days. Because it’s likely to have thunderstorms, it could be isolated higher totals, maybe 50mm,” Ms Kirkup said.

“The low is sitting over Western Australia, South Australia and could bring something reasonable.

“It does have potential to be severe, so certainly something to be watchful on.”

She said the system was tracking to be out to sea by midday on Saturday.

Ms Kirkup said the activity was predicted to be the first “decent” weather event of the thunderstorm season.

She said only a few millimetres of rainfall were expected on Monday.
