Severe thunderstorms expected across the state this week could bring damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain.
Weather bureau meteorologist Pieter Claassen said the weather was expected to clear across South East Queensland following a few showers on Sunday, while isolated thunderstorms began to spread across the central and southern interior.
A trough moving across parts of western Queensland on Wednesday is expected to enhance those thunderstorms and rainfall with Charleville, Longreach and Roma in the firing line.
“We’re looking at a decent chance of severe thunderstorms,” Mr Claassen said.
“The biggest risk there is damaging wind gusts but also concerns about large hail and heavy rainfall as well.”
Storms are forecast to reach the Darling Downs on Thursday, likely reaching South East Queensland later in the day.
Mr Claassen said there was a chance of them also being severe, but it wasn’t yet certain which areas were at the greatest risk.
“There definitely is a risk for southeastern parts as the trough approaches on Thursday and Friday anyway,” he said.
“People should keep an eye on the forecast over the next few days to see what shapes out there.”
The bureau has forecast a downpour of 5-15mm for Brisbane on Thursday and 10-20mm on Friday.
The wet weather is likely to move offshore by the weekend when it is expected to be relatively clear for most of the state.
Temperatures have dropped since a scorching Saturday delivered temperatures above 30C for much of the state.
A southeasterly change which moved across South East Queensland on Sunday means temperatures are expected to remain in the low 20s during the week.
