The 2024/25 Sunshine Coast cricket competition is rolling along nicely with all junior and senior grades reaching the halfway point of the season.
With still a handful of matches to be played until the regular season comes to a close in late February or early March, we’ve collated the data from every single junior and senior player to find out who is leading the way in the bowling and batting ranks.
Coolum’s Daine Smith is the standout batter so far with 402 runs from just five innings in the third grade competition.
The third grade captain has since been elevated into the Sharks second grade side where he’s recorded 106 runs from three innings.
“Yeah I’ve been promoted from third grade which is a shame,” Smith said with a laugh.
“It’s still been really good, a different challenge but I’ve enjoyed it.
“I’d say it’s still a similar standard to second grade, at least it has been for my first few games, where most teams have two top bowlers that spear their attack.”
Smith sits narrowly ahead of first grade duo Michael Eckard (Tewantin-Noosa) and Steven Ledger (Nambour).
With the ball, USC’s English import Ethan Walsh sits at the top of the bowlers rankings ahead of first grade standouts Nathan O’Mara (Maroochydore) and Michael Eckard once again (Tewantin-Noosa).
Walsh, 25, made the move from Surrey to the Sunshine Coast through CricX, a cricket exchange agency helping players find suitable clubs across UK, Europe and Australasia.
“I’ve got a few mates back home that are from Australia so they were trying to explain the conditions as best they could and said I would be quite fortunate with my height and turn,” he said.
The left arm off-spinner, who has taken 22 wickets so far this season, has been working as a coach at the club for junior and senior players.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have a good impact so far from a coaching and playing perspective which has been great,” he said.
“I always take a lot away from when we get overseas players join our club in Ashford.”
“It’s not always focused on how they can perform but what they can bring to the team, their impact in the field and at training and so on which I’ve really enjoyed.
“It’s been really enjoyable for me to see players like Sam Remedious perform well with the bat and ball as well as some young players in our team and around the club.”
Walsh extended his thanks to the USC Cricket Club for their efforts so far this season.
