A helmet may have been the difference between life and death for a climber who fell 20 metres from a mountain on the Sunshine Coast sparking a dramatic rescue on Tuesday.

Maroochydore Fire Station Officer Michael Burley was among one of four firefighting crews, three ambulance units and five remote rescue technicians as well as SES volunteers and a rescue chopper called to Mt Tibrogargan in the Glass House Mountains after reports a rock climber in his 30s fell.

Mr Burley said the injured climber was one of two men who were lead climbing - where a climber is attached to a rope and clips themselves into various hooks on the mountain face as they go - on the eastern face of the mountain when he fell about 20 metres.

He suffered head, shoulder and leg injuries.

The other climber lowered his injured friend to the ground and raised the alarm with emergency services around noon.

Mr Burley said the injured climber was thankfully wearing a helmet when he fell, which could have saved his life.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the man was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said although serious, his injuries weren’t life threatening.

Mr Burley said it was important to remind climbers and hikers of the importance of being prepared, including checking the weather and bringing emergency supplies such as first aid kits.
