LifeFlight crew airlifts man from ship off Sunshine Coast in daring night rescue

A Bundaberg-based LifeFlight rescue crew carried out a daring night-time rescue Saturday night, winching a man from a car carrier vessel off the Sunshine Coast after he became unwell.

The rescue helicopter was dispatched at 8.40pm to the ship, which was about 12 kilometres offshore.

A Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) spokeswoman said they received the initial call at 6:55pm, reporting the man, aged in his 60s, was suffering from abdominal pain.

Upon arrival, the helicopter pilot positioned the aircraft over the vessel, allowing the QAS flight paramedic and rescue crewmen to be winched down to the deck.

Once on board, the paramedic assessed and treated the patient before the entire team was winched back into the chopper.

The man was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
