Sunshine Coast Grammar School’s head of primary will not be returning the prestigious establishment in 2023 after battling ill health while on leave.

In an email to parents sent by the school’s principal Anna Owen on Thursday morning, it was revealed Paul Clegg had resigned after 16 years of “dedicated and super work” at Grammar.

Mr Clegg, who at one point was the school’s acting principal, had been on extended leave in 2022 due to ill health as well as caring for his wife Christine who suffers from a rare and permanent disability.

“Paul has asked me to inform you that he is grateful to have had the opportunity to work, learn and lead at Sunshine Coast Grammar School,” Mrs Owen said in her email.

“He has felt honoured and privileged to have been a part of a dedicated staff, who through their diverse positions across the school, play such an important role in making a collective difference to learning and life at the School.”

Mrs Owen said in her email Mr Clegg would continue with his involvement on education boards and associations across Australia.

“I am sure that I speak for the whole community in saying that we are saddened by his decision; one that has been made after considerable thought,” she said.

“Paul has worked tirelessly to steward the Primary School of Grammar, supporting three principals, countless families, students and staff members.

“Paul holds a special and distinguished place in the wider Sunshine Coast region, largely due to his sincerity, deep faith and conviction.”

Grammar’s principal said the school would begin recruitment to find Mr Clegg’s replacement in early in 2023, with Craig Angel continuing in his role as acting head of primary, and Brenda Gahan will remain acting in the role of dean of primary, years three to six.

Mr Clegg took up the role as acting principal in 2012 following the departure of Nigel Fairbairn, with the teaching veteran praised for his “great leadership and management qualities”.
