Sunshine Coast business iExpedition hibernates during Covid-19

A Sunshine Coast business awarded for its adventure travel experiences admits the global health pandemic has hit them hard. But one thing has kept them motivated.

While the challenges of the Covid Pandemic have been incredibly tough for the tourism industry, one winner of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards credits the awards benefits with helping them through.

Ben Alexander from iExpedition, a specialist adventure travel business, said winning the Small Tours and Transfers categories of the Awards in 2018 and 2019 was incredibly rewarding.

“Our business was created out of identifying a gap in the market catering for travellers seeking adventure expeditions such as cruises to Antarctica but like many, we sank out teeth into the business and were too busy to reflect and celebrate our achievements along the way,” Mr Alexander said.

“Providing information from a team of passionate, highly qualified travel experts with a shared love of exploration and giving people the opportunity to book their expeditions online has been really successful for us, but the Awards applications process provided the opportunity to really see just how much we had achieved.

“Even in 2019 when we entered for a second time, the growth in just one year was incredible – and when you are in it, getting things done you forget to celebrate along the way,” he said.

Mr Alexander said while he had to hibernate the business because of Covid and seek alternative work, the Awards had provided a great opportunity to increase awareness about what they did and helped with business planning.

“In reviewing your achievements as part of the applications process, we identified new opportunities to pursue.”

Encouraging other tourism businesses to enter the Awards, Mr Alexander said even with the significant challenges iExpeditions had faced since their wins, he said the Awards helped give them confidence for the future.

“Already we have strong interest for expeditions in 2022 and we are already taking bookings so as soon as travel restrictions allow, I’m sure we will bounce back.”

Applications now close at 5pm on Monday, August 30.
