Mining conference stripped back amid virus concerns

COVID-19 restrictions and Noosa Council’s ban on mass gatherings weren’t enough to put a stop to the annual mining industry conference.

COVID-19 restrictions and Noosa Council's ban on mass gatherings weren't enough to put a stop to the annual mining industry conference held in Noosa.

The Noosa Mining and Exploration Investor Conference last year attracted more than 1000 delegates from around the country and 70 listed mining companies.

This year's conference will be a hybrid event with live presentations to up to 300 people and virtual presentations as organisers adhere to COVID restrictions and Noosa Council's ban on gatherings with more than 500 people.

"It has been bloody stressful, but we just do the best we can," conference convener Phil Dickinson said.

Event co-ordinators did not commit to the live aspects of the conference until recent border relaxations were announced.

A former mining engineer and stockbroker, Mr Dickinson launched the Noosa conference, which showcases mining companies listed on the stock exchange to potential investors, in 2011.

The majority of delegates hail from the east coast of Australia and they are waiting to make sure the borders stay open allowing them to enjoy their working holiday.

"You just don't know is going to happen, we are just remaining flexible," Mr Dickinson said.

Event co-ordinators were keen to give attendees the full Noosa experience having already held an exclusively online event earlier in the year.

"It's about staying with your commitment to the business and trying to maintain your presence in the market place," Mr Dickinson said.

The conference will be held at Peppers Resort from November 11 to 13.
