The former head of Master Builders Queensland says he plans to turn Maleny Dairies into a “powerhouse” after joining the farm last month.

“It’s the journey from good to great,” Grant Galvin said.

Mr Galvin, 46, stepped down as chief executive at Master Builders early this year after taking charge in 2013.

After nearly nine years he said it was time to leave, knowing he left a strong team with “fresh eyes” to take and grow it.

“Success is if you can leave it in more capable hands,” he said.

While there were other job opportunities on the table, Mr Galvin said he joined Maleny Dairies as its chief operating officer on June 1 for its people, local brand and because it was “growing at a phenomenal rate”.

Farming since 1948, Maleny Dairies is a fourth-generation family-owned dairy farm in the hills of Maleny on the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

The farm sells milk, yoghurt, custard, and cream.

Mr Galvin, referring to himself as the “chief optimism officer” on LinkedIn, said he was confident he could take the farm to the “next level” and double its annual production in five years from its existing 14 million litres of milk a year.

“It’s the most exciting journey I think I’ll ever go on,” he said.

Mr Galvin – responsible for the farm’s supply chain – said he wanted to invest in new staff, new production technology and branch into more stores and supermarkets in South East Queensland.

To “supercharge” the business he said it was also vital to upskill and empower existing employees. He added that leadership was the biggest skill he could transfer from his old to new workplace.

He wanted to launch new products too, with lactose-free milk arriving in September.

Mr Galvin said the dairy’s leadership team was looking at every opportunity to turn the dairy farm into a “powerhouse” business.

“We’re going to be turbocharging Maleny Dairies,” he said.

Mr Galvin said he was honoured to help lead the family-owned business, adding that he wished to stay until he retired.

“It’s their family legacy we’ve got to respect,” he said.
