A single mum who has defied doctors’ expectations following a terminal cancer diagnosis is now hoping for one more Christmas with her children as her health deteriorates.

She also has a strong message for other women – insist on a pap smear and a diagnosis if something is not right.

Bli Bli single mum-of-two Angie Evans, 45, was born and raised on the Sunshine Coast and returned here after living in Adelaide for a few years to raise her two children, Isabelle and Jagger Evans-Corbett.

After fighting for a cervical cancer diagnosis for years and the subsequent hysterectomy, chemotherapy and other cancer treatments she underwent, doctors gave Angie a grim diagnosis of two years to live.

That was nearly three years ago.

Angie refused the palliative chemotherapy, which she claimed had the risk with it of shortening her life further, and sought alternative treatments.

She cashed in her super to pay for the treatment and also to support her two children because she could no longer work.

Her sister, Coolum Beach woman Leila Evans, called her “the strongest woman” for having pushed through the pain of her chemotherapy to continue her cleaning job before her terminal diagnosis.

But she can no longer afford her alternative treatment.

Her financial focus, too, has shifted as the cancer has spread throughout her pelvic area and at this point could be anywhere in her body.

“Timeline-wise, (the doctors) have no idea,” Angie said.

“If I can get one more Christmas in with my kids that would be amazing.”

She now wants to be able to take her children on an occasional weekend away when she feels well and is in need of mobility aids and in-home help.

“I don’t want their last memories of me to be sitting on the couch and watching TV because we couldn’t do things,” Angie said.

Leila started a GoFundMe for her sister, which has so far raised more than $17,000 of its $100,000 goal.

Leila said Angie was one of the most generous people she knew and found it hard to ask for financial help.

She also said her sister’s “pigheadedness” had served her well in her cancer battle.

“Even if her doctor said ‘you’ve got a week’, she’d say ‘bull----, I’ve got a month’,” Leila said.

Angie encouraged other women who suspected something was wrong, especially something with their cervix, to keep raising it with their doctor.

“Trust your own body and your own intuition, keep pushing,” she said.

“Even with that vaccination they do for young women now they are not foolproof.”

The HPV vaccine was introduced to the national immunisation program in 2007.
