Alexa Leary: Sunshine Coast triathlete in a serious condition after a biking accident in Pomona

A Sunshine Coast triathlete is fighting for life after a horror bike crash in Pomona left her with serious injuries.

Friends and family of Sunshine Coast athlete Alexa Leary are hoping for the best as the 19-year-old clings to life in a Brisbane hospital.

Miss Leary was seriously injured in a bicycle crash at Pomona on Saturday.

She has been in a coma at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital since the crash.

Doctors on Monday discovered blood clots on her brain.

Her family have been told she suffered major brain damage.

Sunshine Coast triathlete Alexa Leary is fighting for life in a Brisbane hospital after a serious bicycle crash at Pomona.

Leary’s dad, Russell, was one of the first people on the scene of the crash and said he couldn’t believe his eyes.

“I always follow behind the team when she is training of a morning and as I came over the hill an ambulance raced by me,” he said.

“I kept on riding and saw Alexa lying in the gutter and in the grass and was told she had clipped the wheel of another rider causing her to fall.

“They transferred her straight to Brisbane and she has already had an operation to repair major knee damage while they also took half of her scalp off to release pressure on the brain.”

Mr Leary said Monday night was the biggest night of his daughter’s life.

“We know she will fight as hard as she can and that tonight she will either live or die,” he said.

Leary has represented Australia at the World Titles in Switzerland where she received a silver medal in 2019.

Mr Leary said support his family had received since the crash been tremendous.

“She is one of the most amazing people there is and someone who gives everything to the world,” he said.

“She’s an excellent athlete, is loved by all and an absolute jovial character.”
