For regional and rural sporting clubs it can be difficult for players to be recognised and selected in higher level competitions.

For 12-year-old Emmett Schnitzerling a career in professional football is an ultimate dream and one that has a high possibility of coming true.

In the three short years Emmett has played for Stanthorpe Carlton United Football Club, he’s well and truly soared above his grade and has been selected to play in Germany next year.

Emmett recently took part in the Rale Rasic Joeys Mini World Cup, held each year in the northern NSW town of Inverell, which this year returned for the first time since 2017.

The tournament, named in honour of the late Socceroos coach Rale Rasic, is run by German ex-pat Heinrich Haussler to give kids from regional areas a chance to impress on the international stage.

Emmett said it was a great feeling of relief when his name was called out as one of the lucky players to head overseas next year.

“It was a big relief when my name was called, I was really hoping to be picked,” he said.

Emmett said he enjoys being able to play alongside his friends and is hopeful the Germany tour will kickstart a future career in professional football.

Stanthorpe Carlton United Football junior colts coach Tim Gaske described Emmett as a natural player, with a bright future in soccer ahead.

“It’s a great achievement, the (Joey’s Mini competition) is a tough one,” he said.

“He’s gone from the first year being a good player to after three years being the best player for his age in the Stanthorpe competition.”

Mr Gaske said Emmett’s talent on the field has seen him play in under 16’s competitions in the region.

“He’s improved out of sight and if he keeps up at this trajectory, he’s going to be a very good player in higher level competitions,” he said.

The Australian Joeys Mini World Cup tour will be kicking goals around Germany in June and July next year.
