Experts are predicting the coldest day in over two years on Thursday morning in Stanthorpe with temperatures to plummet below freezing.

Despite the slight chance of snow expected on Wednesday morning, Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Rosa Hoff said there was too much cloud cover for the snow to form.

“There were no reports of snow around the region (on Wednesday),” she said.

Ms Hoff said the Granite Belt will reach a high of 8C on Wednesday with temperatures to drop to a low of -4C on Thursday morning.

“If it does drop that low it will be the coldest day of the year for Stanthorpe and the coldest day since August 2019,” she said.

There will be also be widespread frost across the Granite Belt on Thursday.

Temperatures will rise again from Friday with a maximum of 13C in the forecast.

It will bring a 90 per cent chance of rainfall and potential thunderstorms, with 5mm to 10mm expected across Stanthorpe and the wider Granite Belt.

The additional rain comes amid one of the region’s wettest winters in recent years, with both Storm King and Connolly Dams still at 100 per cent capacity after the March flood event.
