As the Granite Belt approaches the middle of winter, with warmer than average and subzero temperatures predicted, the Border Post takes a step back in time to look back at the coldest ever July days.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Peter Markworth said heavy rain could grace the region again soon.

“The Granite Belt’s rainy conditions could see the odd (rain) fall of up to 30mm on Friday,” he said.

Mr Markworth said the extra moisture, cloud cover and northerly winds will contribute to temperatures that are “quite a bit warmer than usual”.

“It will be 10 degrees above average on Friday with the lowest average July temperature in Stanthorpe being 1C,” he said.

Average temperatures will “prevail” from the weekend with zero and subzero temperatures predicted for Sunday and Monday.
