A truck driver has allegedly abused police before nearly running down an officer in an attempt to escape a border checkpoint on the Granite Belt.

Police claim a 43-year-old ignored three requests by officers to produce his driver’s licence at the Wallangarra border crossing on Wednesday at 11.30am.

The man allegedly became abusive and struck parts of his truck with his fists after producing two invalid Covid pass documents.

It will be alleged the driver performed a U-turn when he saw an infringement notice being issued, almost hitting a police officer and leaving black tyre tracks while driving away at speed.

Police claim they followed the man to a NSW service station, where he began throwing items at officers through the driver’s seat window and refusing to get out of the truck.

Officers eventually managed to negotiate with the driver and explain his border pass requirements so he could complete a new form.

The man was issued with one infringement notice for failing to comply with a Covid border direction and another three for failing to produce a driver’s licence, failing to wear a seatbelt, and conducting a U-turn over a single or double white line.

Investigations are ongoing.
