Three identified black spots in Stanthorpe have been proposed to undergo $172,000 worth of work, following feedback from the community on areas they were concerned about.

Denham Street was identified as a “reactive site” due to the history of crashes at the intersection.

To improve the road’s safety a median island strip has been proposed to be installed at the intersection as well as new line markings and signage totalling to $75,000.

The intersection of Corundum Street and Marsh Street was identified as a black spot due to being potentially hazardous.

The proposed installation of a new pedestrian crossing on Corundum Street is expected to cost $45,000.

The busy intersection of Whiskey Gully Road and Yellowbox Road currently has no line markings.

Suggested works include pavement widening, the extension of the drain and installation of new signs and line markings estimated at $52,000.

Southern Downs councillor Andrew Gale said it was important for road safety issues in the community to be identified and for the problems to be addressed.

“As part of a comprehensive and ongoing schedule of safety upgrades and improvements to our roads, council continues to address traffic areas of concern in the interest of all road users, locals and visitors alike,” he said.

The investment is part of the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program, which aims to improve road safety by measuring traffic signals at locations where serious crashes have occurred.

The successful approval of each of these proposed projects will not be known until May next year.

This comes after the June announcement where the 2021-22 identified black spots in Stanthorpe were given the go ahead to begin reconstruction works.
