South Burnett councillors drive proactive approach to fixing region’s roads

In a bid to improve the region’s roads, the South Burnett Regional Council is implementing a comprehensive strategy to tackle potholes.

In a determined effort to address the longstanding issue of potholes, the South Burnett Regional Council is attempting to make strides in improving the region’s roads.

South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff emphasised the council’s commitment to enhancing the quality of roads, citing recent positive feedback from residents.

“Council recently received feedback from a satisfied member of the public who stated that Silverleaf Road is the best they have ever seen it, with all the potholes on that road fixed,” Ms Duff said.

Ms Duff said council is focusing on developing a “multi-level approach” to its construction and maintenance programs.

Councillor Heath Sander acknowledged the scope of the task.

“We won’t get every pothole fixed overnight but hope the residents can see that we are trying and can see the difference in recent months with a focus on fixing the basic assets we all use like the roads,” Mr Sander said.

Mr Sander said the effort had not gone unnoticed with “positive comments” received by council.

“I hope we can continue on this path and the residents can see that we as a council are dedicated to investing in the South Burnett region’s roads network,“ he said.

However, addressing potholes has not been without its challenges. On social media community groups, residents have frequently voiced their frustrations about the condition of roads.

In response, Councillor Jane Erkens took a proactive approach in May by driving around her division to document potholes and submit maintenance requests.

She encouraged residents to report any problematic roads to her for inclusion in a spreadsheet.

“I make no promises but will get out and report with a request for maintenance,” Ms Erkens stated, highlighting her commitment to resolving the issue.

Ms Duff said council was developing a “multi-year proactive approach” to its construction and maintenance programs and said one of the largest reseal programs was in the planning stages.
