A beloved mini foxie has lost the use of one of her eyes after a shocking incident that left her South Burnett family with more questions than answers.

Roxy was just nine months old when she suffered a mysterious injury that caused her right eye to pop out of its socket and bulge out of her head.

Summer Lee and her son had been out of their Kingaroy home for most of the day, returning about 4pm on Saturday, March 1.

When they saw Roxy, who was on a lead in the backyard, they immediately noticed her eye was injured.

Her son, who has special needs and relies on Roxy as a comfort animal, went into a meltdown.

She immediately called her daughter, who was with her other son, for help but they thought she was joking at first.

“They thought I was just mucking around,” she said.

“And then they Facetimed me and I showed them Roxy and we all just pretty much … It was like, ‘what the f’ mode.”

They rushed her to the after-hours vet, who was able to put the eye back in and stitched her up.

While some short-nosed dog breeds, like pugs or French bulldogs, are prone to proptosis, a condition where the eye suddenly loosens from the eye socket, this is not a condition that commonly affects mini foxies.

According to Summer, the vet said he could not tell them exactly how the accident happened, but it normally occurs when a dog is shaken or they suffer significant trauma to their head.

While there were other dogs at the property, they were kept in a different area of the yard and there were no injuries on Roxy to indicate an animal had attacked her.

“The vet said there was nothing else, no other injuries, no cuts, no blood, no nothing,” Summer said.

“Because if another animal had done it, there would have been teeth marks or something.”

Summer has never had a problem with any strangers entering her property and nothing unusual was reported by her neighbours, however she said it was possible for someone to get into the backyard through the back fence.

In a post on Facebook she said, “If I ever find out that she was (shaken by a person) and find out who did this, I will make sure without fail that charges will be laid for animal cruelty!!!”

After they returned to the vet on Friday, March 14, they were told that unfortunately Roxy had lost her vision in her right eye, which may need to be completely removed at some stage in the future because there is a risk it may fall out again due to deterioration in the muscles.

Meanwhile, the “little stinker” is back to her mischievous self, playing, running around and pinching things.

“My little fur baby is still as beautiful as ever,” Summer wrote on in a post on Facebook updating the community on her pup’s condition.

“You got this Roxy.”
