A Queensland teacher aide has been charged with sexually abusing three children across the past decade.

Former Cherbourg State School teacher aide Kenneth Day was initially charged with four counts of rape against a girl on June 9, but police have since charged him with abusing two more children.

Police have since charged Day with a further eight child abuse offences spanning back to 2014.

Day, a former member of Cherbourg Aboriginal Council Elders Advisory Group, was initially charged with the rape of one child over a five-month period from January to June this year.

Day was stood down from his position at Cherbourg State School when charges were laid on June 9.

A letter was issued to parents three days later via social media saying a staff member was the “subject of a police investigation” and the school’s priority was first and foremost the welfare of the children.

Queensland Police have since charged Day with a further eight counts of indecent treatment of a child in relation to two additional children.

Day was absent from school from April last year. He is no longer working at the school.

A spokeswoman from the Department of Education said student safety was paramount.

“There is no higher priority for the Department of Education than protecting the safety and

wellbeing of students,” the spokeswoman said.

“In accordance with established procedures, as soon as the department becomes aware of

an incident, investigations commence in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

“We continue to work closely with the Queensland Police Service as part of ongoing

investigations into this matter.”

He has been remanded in custody and is due to reappear for mention in the Murgon Magistrates Court on August 12.

Investigations continue and no further information is available.
