Shane David Richards: Alleged South Burnett drug dealer denied bail

A Tarong man, who allegedly made more than $20,000 from dealing meth, made a bid to be released on bail for Christmas after police swooped on a Burnett property last week and seized a stash of drugs and weapons.

A South Burnett man will spend Christmas behind bars on remand following police raids in the South Burnett that allegedly uncovered a major alleged drug dealing network.

Shane David Richards, 50, was arrested on November 18 when police swooped on a Tarong property where allegedly they seized drugs including methamphetamines, two firearms and two replica guns, ammunition, and cash.

Richards was charged with 62 offences including 50 counts of supplying dangerous drugs, and one count of trafficking dangerous drugs and receiving or possessing property obtained from trafficking or supplying and other related offences.

The Tarong man, dressed in the singlet, shorts and thongs he was arrested in, appeared in Murgon Magistrates Court on Tuesday to apply for bail.

Defence lawyer Corey Cullen told the court his client had a “longstanding” addiction to meth and accepted he needed to undertake rehabilitation.

Mr Cullen also submitted that the particulars of the alleged supply charges were “at the lower end of the scale”.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens disputed this assessment.

“The allegation is the defendant supplied over 60 grams of meth to 14 persons and received in excess of $20,000,” he said.

Richards shook his head and muttered to himself while Sergeant Stevens detailed the allegations against him.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair denied Mr Richards’ application for bail, and remanded him in custody until February 15.

Operation Konopie has seen a total of 57 people charged with 404 offences, including two Mundubbera women slapped with more than 140 charges of supplying drugs between them.

Mele Lineti Sanipepa Cross and Kirsty Evelyn Mcleish were both charged earlier this month and are on bail awaiting their next hearings at Maryborough Magistrates Court on January 24.
