A Kingaroy woman facing charges for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend has appeared in court again just days after being granted bail.

Kaycee Jayd Byrne was charged with wounding earlier this week after she allegedly armed herself during a fight with her boyfriend and injured both the man and herself, and was released on bail after her first court appearance.

The 30-year-old appeared in Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Wednesday for a hearing on an unrelated charge of evading police, which related to an incident in January this year.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said police were patrolling Weens Road at 11.03pm on January 3 when they ran across a car registered in Byrne’s name parked in the middle of the road, forcing other traffic to swerve around it.

Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, but it took off and reached speeds of 130km/h and eventually forced police to abandon the pursuit.

Byrne was served an evasion notice two days later.

The Kingaroy mother claimed in court she was not the driver at the time, and only did not identify the true driver in a statutory declaration as they were a former abusive partner.

Byrne’s matter had been listed for a hearing as she had intended to plead not guilty and run her own defence.

However after Byrne’s failure to properly notify the prosecution that she would be relying on grounds of reasonable excuse, Sergeant Stevens opposed the Kingaroy woman’s line of argument.

Despite assistance from duty lawyer Jay Rose and the benefit of a near two-hour adjournment, Byrne still appeared to have not made up her mind on whether to start the hearing or plead guilty.

It was only moments before Magistrate John Smith returned to the courtroom that Byrne told the duty lawyer, “I’ll just cop it sweet”, and entered a plea of guilty to the evading police charge.

Ms Rose told the court Byrne maintained she was not the driver at the time and that “she is more terrified of the driver of the vehicle than she is of police”.

She also told the court Byrne was facing a wounding charge which she was still recovering from her own injuries which occurred during the incident.

Magistrate Smith imposed the minimum penalty of a $6,672.50 and disqualified her from driving for two years.

Byrne returns to court on the wounding charge on September 13.
